Book Mosque The 100 Most Iconic Islamic Houses Of Worship: Impossible Collection by Assouline
Description
Places of worship have served as a benchmark for the heights of human achievement since time immemorial: the nobler the sacred shrine, the nobler the society. Over the centuries, civilizations considered their own worth in the face of the splendor of local religious structure and built to exacting standards and on previously unimaginable scales, and empires asserted their dominion over lands and people through sacred structures erected.
This is particularly true in the case of Islam, a religion whose structures proliferated throughout the known world of the “Islamic Golden Age,” which coincided with the “Dark Ages” of the West. The birth of geometry and the invention of the double dome are just two inventions that contributed to the architectural splendor of the mosque. However, the mosque is much more than just a place of worship. It plays a complex role as an institution where religious education is often provided and as a social center where marriages and community meetings can take place. Wherever the mosque is built, it strives to integrate into the sociological and urban landscape. It also plays the role of informing the architecture of the surrounding city and influencing its residents.
Although all mosques arise from a common tradition of reverence, different sects, regions and practices have led to many innovations and novel architectural forms. The mosques are the latest addition to the 'ultimate collection' and constitute a journey across centuries and continents that brings readers to the threshold of 100 of the most historically significant buildings that house the faithful of the growing religion the fastest and second largest. in the world.
White gloves and an iconic canvas tote bag are included with every purchase of Assouline's ultimate collection.
