After the crowds disperse and the traffic fades, the Paris of early morning vibrates on silent notes; this is precisely the moment that photographer Jean-Michel Berts chose to take these monumental portraits of the city. Perceived by his camera obscura, the buildings, the completely deserted streets and even the gardens take on a poetic, ethereal and almost dreamlike thickness.
As Francis I confided to Charles V, “Paris is not a city, it is a world”. At dawn or dusk, long after the teeming crowds have dispersed, long after the roaring traffic has faded, Paris still vibrates with a life of its own, silent, dark and mysterious. This is precisely the moment that photographer Jean-Michel Berts chose to capture it, in black and white: from the Opera to Montmartre, along the banks of the Seine or on the Grands Boulevards, in the footsteps of Baudelaire, Brassaï, Huysmans... Perceived by his camera obscura, the buildings, the completely deserted streets and even the trees and staircases take on a poetic, ethereal and almost dreamlike thickness.
Accompanied by a magnificent text by Pierre Assouline, this work, much more than a hymn to the city of lights, surprises Paris similar, in this light, to the work of a virtuoso sculptor. Finally, the exceptional dimensions of this work allow us to fully appreciate the spectacular quality of each of these photographs, reproduced in full pages.

About the Author
Photographer since the age of sixteen, Jean-Michel Berts today enjoys international fame, exhibiting his work in numerous art fairs in Brussels, London, Saint-Tropez, Berlin and Hamburg. He has also produced advertising campaigns for luxury brands, such as Lancôme, Dior and Cacharel.
His photographs are accessible on the website www.parisjeanmichelberts.com.
Author and journalist, Pierre Assouline has published around twenty works. Editor-in-chief of the magazine Lire for twenty years, he is now an editorialist for Le Monde 2 and Le Nouvel Observateur.
