Book Marbella Sol d'Assouline

Description

Marbella is both a blank slate and a palimpsest. It could be anything to anyone. You can meet a rock star in the morning and European royalty in the afternoon. There can't be many places where two such unique personalities could cross paths. To paraphrase Churchill, it is a kaleidoscope wrapped in a mosaic, inside a crucible. The result of successive waves of visitors who have left their mark over the years, Marbella is a social archaeological site where generations have lived a life of sun-kissed leisure. Today, the popular image of Marbella may be that of a sort of European Miami, but just scratching that glitzy surface takes you back to the days when Marbella was a simpler place.
In the 1950s it was a traditional, quiet, dusty village, and today the old town is still a charming maze of streets, some so narrow you can touch the stark white walls on either side. At Easter, solemn and dramatic religious processions wind through this maze of alleys and squares, as they have for generations. But what is really striking about Marbella is how unchanged it has remained. Historical figures with long ties to the coast, including of course Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, may have passed into history, but their presence lives on in those who follow them.
With personal narrative text by historian and journalist Nicholas Foulkes, a long-time visitor to Marbella, this colorful volume illustrates various aspects of this picturesque port, from the mountains to the beaches, from the charming old town to the glamorous nightlife.
