Book Chinese Art: Impossible Collection by Assouline

Description

Over the past century, China has experienced a period of more rapid growth and total transformation than any other nation in modern history. How can we begin to understand the country that emerged from such a dramatic era of change? The answer may lie in Chinese art. This is certainly what renowned art collectors Adrian Cheng and John Dodelande argue in their upcoming book, Chinese Art: The Impossible Collection. After all, China's history as a land of enormous influence dates back to its dynastic past, and the nation's art has always been in conversation with its customs.

The most anticipated volume in Assouline's exclusive Ultimate series, Chinese Art: The Impossible Collection highlights 100 works of contemporary art that reveal the social, political, and cultural evolution of a burgeoning nation. Carefully curated by Cheng and Dodelande, the 100 works are presented in chronological order, beginning with traditional paintings from the early 20th century and culminating with some of the most avant-garde works of the "new generation" of Chinese artists, whose creations often explore and critique the policies that defined China's rapid growth into a new global power. The particular themes and conversations raised by these 100 works are reviewed in essays and commentaries by three of the world's leading experts on Chinese art: Philip Tinari of the UCAA in Beijing, Alexandra Munroe of the Guggenheim in New York and Karen Smith of OCAT Contemporary. Art terminal in Xi'an.

Although readers will come away from Chinese Art with a nuanced understanding of Chinese culture, this volume is also a work of art in its own right, a must-have collector's item for any enthusiast of Chinese art and culture. Assouline's ultimate collection is a tribute to the art of luxury bookmaking: the oversized volume is hand-bound using traditional techniques, with multiple hand-slanted spreads on artist-quality paper and housed in a luxurious silk shell.

White gloves and an iconic canvas tote bag are included with every purchase of Assouline's ultimate collection.

Author

Adrian Cheng is a prolific and dedicated collector of contemporary Chinese art and a powerful force on the global art scene. In 2020, ArtReview ranked him twelfth on its list of the 100 most influential people in the art world. This influence is due in part to his K11 Art Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes emerging artists internationally. Cheng also holds positions at some of the world's leading art institutions, including the Center Pompidou in Paris, the Met in New York and the Royal Academy in London.

John Dodelande, tech art entrepreneur, businessman and investor, is perhaps best known as one of the leading collectors of contemporary Chinese art. Dodelande has spent the last decade building a collection of some of the most important living Chinese artists, members of the post-1980s generation that saw China's rapid urbanization.
The same age as most of the artists, Dodelande feels that the artists speak the same language as him, a relationship strengthened by his travels to meet the artists in person. “I know them all,” he said. “Being in their studios, observing their body language and feeling their internal strength – it helps me make sense of art. » He feels a particularly intense connection with pieces containing hidden elements of humor, poetry and humanity. Dodelande uses his collection to attract well-deserved recognition among the younger generation of Chinese artists, from organizing events to lending artwork to museums. Dodelande was the first to organize an exhibition of contemporary Chinese art in Georgia. He is convinced that the universality of art is a means of forging a new Silk Road, a significant network of commercial and cultural links between East and West.
