Book Self Portraits: From 1800 to the Present Assouline

Description

With Self Portraits: From 1800 to the Present, Philippe Ségalot and Morgane Guillet have brought together their ultimate collection of self-portraits, alternating between iconic figures and lesser-known artists whose works deeply moved them.

The book unfolds chronologically. Page after page, the reader is immersed in a true gallery where the works can be contemplated at scale, without any other distraction — an intimate journey through art history through the prism of self-portraiture.

The discerning selection embraces a wide variety of mediums, ranging from traditional painting to photography, neon, and even found objects, bearing witness, as we approach our time, to the way in which artists continue to redefine this genre.

While some works do not necessarily represent the artists themselves, they all express their personal interpretation of what a self-portrait can be, what they chose to reveal, how they wished to be perceived, and the way in which they saw themselves through their art.

This work opens with an introspective text by Robert Storr, former dean of the Yale School of Art. With over sixty meticulously selected self-portraits, readers will be able to admire some of the most remarkable works in the art world, from Claude Monet, Félix Vallotton, and Gustave Caillebotte to David Hammons, Elizabeth Peyton, and Steven Shearer.
